Scenario 3 Advocacy for playgroup

Every week, parents in the local community meet in the Council-owned community hall to

run a playgroup. The aim of the playgroup is to provide an opportunity for parents of recently

arrived refugees with young children to get together and support each other. The playgroup

has been meeting every Wednesday for the last eight months with the support of a local

welfare organisation. The early childhood education and care centre regularly loans

equipment and books to the playgroup.

At a team meeting, the Director informs the staff of the child care centre that the playgroup?s

future is under threat as the Council want to lease the hall to a senior citizens? group whose

own premises was destroyed by fire. The Seniors? group is able to pay a substantial rent

which the Council says will help to off-set the costs of maintaining the hall.
