Essay One

Peer Evaluation will take place on Wednesday, February 3.

Essay and Outline are due: By 11:55 pm on Monday, February 8 via Eagle Online

Assignment: You will write an analysis on one of the works we have read and evaluated

in class. Your essay must be at least 4 complete pages in length-excluding the works

cited page; the works cited page will be, at least, page 5. In addition, the essay will

comprise of 7 paragraphs: an introduction; 5 body paragraphs; and a solid conclusion.

Remember, an analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts,

evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience.

Critical papers analyze or explain some important point about a piece of literature.

The American Dark Romantics exemplify the European Romantic Movement?s emphasis

on emotion and trepidation with the purpose of creating stories that inspire readers to fear

and question the moral and social integrity of the world around them. Edgar Allan Poe

wrote grim works to stimulate thought as to the inherent moral fallibility of mankind. As

opposed to venerating nature, Poe portrays the world as dark and decaying; hence, nature

does not reveal optimistic truths to man, rather its revelations give insight as to the

malevolent purpose of mankind. The characters, in his stories, present mankind as prone

to self-destruction through their propensity to self-imposed isolation-whether physical

and/or psychological, acts of betrayal, and guilt, and even the attempt to assuage feelings

of guilt. You will evaluate any one story- The Tale-Tall Heart, Cask of Amontillado,

or Hop Frog- and analyze how the story exemplifies characteristics indicative of the

Dark Romantic Movement.

Submission Requirements: The essay must comply with the pagination requirement: a

minimum of 4 complete pages-excluding the work cited page- to be acceptable and you

must use 10 direct quotes to substantiate your claim. The essay will be double-spaced

and comply with MLA standards: it must be written in 12 point, Times New Roman.

Please label the outline and the final draft appropriately. For instance, you will provide

your name and then indicate the document type: John Doe Outline and John Doe Essay

One. In addition, you are to write your essay in the third person and you are to

remain in the literary present tense.

You must submit the final draft and a typed outline onto Eagle Online. The submission

box for Essay One is clearly indicated. In addition, all papers must be submitted to

Turnitin. Papers that are not submitted to Turnitin will receive a 0 on the assignment.

Reminder:

?

Failure to comply with the minimum page requirements will constitute an

automatic 0 (zero) on the assignment.

?

Failure to include a works cited page or to parenthetically cite source material

correctly per MLA specifications will result in an automatic 0 (zero) on the

with the page number.
